Dear Parents,
On Thursday, October 29th, Mrs. Fickle’s and Mrs. Thomas’ classes will join together to give students the opportunity to participate in a unique learning experience. Students will be given their very own pumpkin that they will take through the process of carving into a jack ’o lantern. Afterwards, students will write, edit, and publish a descriptive paragraph discussing the significance of this event while using specific details from their memory. This activity is designed to help students use their five senses to tell a story that details the importance of an event in order to enhance their writing skills.
In order to make this day successful, we need parent volunteers who will help monitor students and help carve pumpkins. No students will be given carving tools. There will be approximately 50 students during each core period who will need their pumpkins carved. If you are interested in volunteering, please email your child’s Language Arts teacher, call the school (726-1126, ext. 1014 or 1017), or indicate your interest on the form below. We look forward to seeing you!
To help cover the costs of the pumpkins and supplies, we are asking that each child bring $5 to their Language Arts teacher tomorrow, Tuesday, October 27th, along with the completed form below. This allows Mrs. Fickle and Mrs. Thomas enough time to pick up and pay for the pumpkins before classes on Thursday. Any additional money (or supplies) you would like to donate is greatly appreciated.

I have changed the RDJ rubric to make it easier to understand and easier to write! This will help tremendously I believe. Check it out under the RDJ’s page. I also added a sheet for instructions on how to send the RDJ on the same page. We will go over this in class on Tuesday.

Unity
I dreamed I stood in a studio and watched two sculptors there
The clay they used was a young child’s mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher- the tools she used
Were books and music and art
One a parent with a guiding hand and a gentle, loving heart.
And when at last their work was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought
For the things they had molded into the child
Could neither be sold nor bought.
And each agreed they would have failed
If he had worked alone
For behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher the home!

Parents,
This poem says it all! We have to support each other’s efforts for the benefit of the children. I believe in the TEAM policy; Together Everyone Achieves More. This year, I am going to use a Reading and Writing Workshop model of instruction. This mode will allow for individuality and differentiation. Check out my webpage for more important information regarding English language arts this year. I look forward to being your partners in education and working with your children, who will truly SHINE as Sea Turtles!

Respectfully,
Rachel Fickle
